The National Observatory of Technology and Society (ONTSI) has published a new version of its report on the use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Spanish companies. The data exposed, show that both technologies are being adopted by companies at a slow but seemingly safe pace (Four out of ten entities with more than 249 employees use these technologies). There is still a long way to go, but the use of AI and Big Data in the business world is here to stay, automate processes and boost strategic decision making.

Use of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data rises in companies of all sizes

It grows by 3.6 points to 11.8% of companies with more than 10 employees. Large companies (more than 249 people) stand out, with an increase of eight percentage points by 2022. Among microenterprises (fewer than ten people), 4.6% use this technology, more than one percentage point above the 2021 value.

Spain ranks fourteenth in AI adoption, matching the European average. The sectors that use AI the most are information and communications (41.9%) and ICT (41.3%). These correspond to those with the most data analytics companies (35.2% in ICT and 34.7% in information and communications).

Big Data analytics is present in 13.9% of companies, which is almost three points more than last year. 3.7% of micro-companies also use this technology, half a point more than in 2021.

Companies with AI and data specialists on the rise

The percentage of companies with AI specialists increased by one point: from 1.4% to 2.3%. By size, only 1.6% of small companies (10 to 49 employees) and 4.4% of medium-sized companies (50 to 249) have this type of personnel, compared to 10.5% of large companies.

Finally, the Spanish cities with the greatest mastery of this technology are Madrid (17%), Catalonia and Rioja (both with 16.1%), which lead in the use of Big Data.
